Just wondering...

Why do people feel like it's necessary to tell me horror pregnancy stories?

Here's a few things people have said to me, most of them being complete strangers, after finding out that I'm pregnant.

  • My friend from church has a mentally retarded baby.  She was breastfeeding and her appendix exploded and didn't know it - she assumed it was just pain from giving labor a few days earlier.  She poisoned her baby while she continued to breastfeed for two more days.

  • Did you hear about the lady this past weekend that was delivering her baby and something happened during labor where either the baby or the mom was going to die.  The dad had to actually choose which one to keep.

  • How far along are you?  ::insert my response here::  Oh, I miscarried 1 week later than you are right now.  Not to freak you out or anything....

  • I'm a nurse at ___ hospital here in town and helped deliver a still-born baby yesterday.  It was terrible.

  • You're pregnant?  Wow, good luck with that.

  • You're gonna get soooooooo huge!!!

Do me a favor and try to be sensitive to pregnant people - I really don't want to hear you're horror stories about how you were in labor for 38 hours or how bad it's going to hurt while recovering from labor or how I can "look forward" to the cracking and bleeding brought on from breastfeeding.  Thanks peeps.

I just want someone to tell me that it's not going to hurt.  I'd love you forever if you did.

  1. People are ridiculous.

Maybe just maybe, some of the worst were told that it wasn't "going to hurt?" Yeah, that's all I've got.

    Sorry dear.

  2. OMG! I cannot believe you are pregnant! Congrats and enjoy every minute of it. Don't listen to people who tell stupid insenstive stories.

  3. Okay, ya got me out of lurkdom with that one.

Baby #1 Super easy pregnancy, painful(sorry) but fast (3hour), medication free labor and delivery. Stitches not so fun. Hormonal rollercoaster for weeks afterwards but if you know what is happening(duh! just had a baby!)then it is more manageable. All in all it was great.

Baby #2 More difficult pregnancy. More aches, pains, discomfort etc. Another fast(2 1/2 hour) labor and delivery. This time in a bathtub! It was great! Very few stitches that didn't hurt and healed quickly. Hormonal again but this time I KNEW it was coming so I was strict about who could come to visit and when. All negative, critical, unhelpful types were not allowed near me.

You will do GREAT, Megan! Please avoid those people(as much as you can) who rain on your parade. This is a wonderful, amazing, exciting thing that is happening inside your body. What a gift it is to be a woman and to be able to carry a baby. I can't wait for my next one! No news yet. (:

I was in Hungary with #1 so didn't have the benefit of birthing classes. My sister-in-law loaned me Dr. Sears book on Christian Parenting and it helped me SO much. I went from being scared to better understanding what was happening to my body during my pregnancy and labor.

When it hurt I didn't just think, "Dang, that hurt!" I could actually picture what was happening in my body. It wasn't just pain, something was happening in my body to help get this baby out! Once I understood this I could just sit back in awe and amazement at how God created us.

I think it, in part, helped me have fast labors. I tried to be relaxed, kept moving and let my body do what God had designed it to with as little medical intervention as possible. It gets me excited to just think about! (:

I am so excited for you! You will do great! Go Megan! (:

  5. Megan,

Seriously, all those horror stories suck! BUT not to worry, not all stories are like that. I had an amazing pregnancy, fast delivery, and once I got the epidural life was freaking GREAT!

    You'll do great!
