Baby wearing 101.

Have I told you lately how much I love baby wearing?  This is definitely a fairly new thing for me, as I never did it with Jaxon.  I fell in love with from the first time I wore Cohen, just days after he was born... I'll never forget the first time I wrapped him up in my Sleepy Wrap (best gift EVER, thanks Mom) and immediately he snuggled up next to my chest... asleep within minutes.  Can you imagine how comforting it must feel to a baby to be wrapped up tight next to their mama?

I wore him everywhere we went and even more frequently at home.  It made life so much easier to take care of Jaxon and still feel like I was connecting and comforting Cohen as well.  I wore him to the grocery store, to church, even to a concert.  He always did so well, I swear it was the perfect soother on fussy days.

Once he started getting bigger (about 6ish months), the wrap became more difficult to maneuver because of the fabric and how stretchy it was.  No matter how tight I would wrap it, he would eventually slip down lower and lower, until I'd have to take him out and re-wrap.  This is when I started looking at other options for a different carrier.  I had a chat with a friend of mine who owned a specialty baby store in Waco, and she told me about the Ergo carrier.  She went over many of its highlights, and told me how she still wears her 30 pound daughter in it.  Of course, the first thing I did was look at the price tag.  It was WAY over my budget and so I noted it in my head, did some more research, mentioned it to Tyler a time or two hoping he'd tell me to go for it, and moved on.  I started looking at other cheaper options, maybe a woven wrap or possibly even a sling of some type.

A couple months ago, the un-thinkable happened.  Less than a week after I won the quilt, I also won tickets to a kids festival here in town.  While there, I noticed an Ergo retailer.  I walked up to her and started up a conversation saying "the Ergo is my dream carrier..." and before I could even finish my sentence, she said to me, "if you come tomorrow and model the carrier for 3 hours with your baby, I'll give you one for free."  WHAAAT?  Sign me up.  The next day I arrived with Cohen, fully anticipating a complete scam... and 2 hours later, walked out with a $120 carrier, for free.  Nada, zip.  A huge...HUGE...blessing.

I love the Ergo.  It is SO easy to support Cohen (or Jaxon!!) without taking a big strain on my back.  I love that I can wear it on my back, front, or hip.  I love how supported he feels in it, without worrying about him slipping out or it getting any looser.

Another thing I love about it?  My husband will wear it as well.  Nothing sexier than a guy wearing a baby, yes?

I was asked recently by a friend which one I would recommend over the other, and I wasn't sure how to answer it.  I like them both for different reasons... here's a break down of my thoughts on the two.

Pros:
·        “The best place after the womb”
·        Perfect for snuggling
·        Babies LOVE to nap next to Momma!
·        Leaves you  hands-free to work on other things
Cons:
·        Takes a little bit to learn how to wrap and get comfortable with it
·        It’s long, the ends get dirty quickly
·        As the baby grows, it’s hard to get it tight enough

Pros:
·        Love the support, easy on your body and baby’s as well.
·        No worries about the baby falling out or not getting it tight enough
·        Versatility to wear on your back, front, or hip
·        More freedom to be more ‘active’ while baby wearing
Cons:
·        Initially hard to put baby on your back by yourself
·        More bulky than the wrap

Blah blah blah... all that to say, I would still recommend a Sleepy Wrap over an Ergo to begin with, as a newborn.  As your baby gets older, I would then recommend getting an Ergo, especially because it can hold much more weight.  The Boba carrier is another that I would be interested in comparing to the Ergo as I've heard great things about that as well.

As always, feel free to ask if you have any questions... I'd love to help!  And if you have tried either of these or a different carrier, I'd leave to hear your thoughts as well.

How's it going?

This is the question that I keep hearing from so many people. It's amazing the amount of love and support we have felt from so many people, 99% of them hours upon hours away from us.

The answer? It depends on the day...

Yesterday? Great! Cohen was easy-peasy. Jaxon was happy. The weather was beautiful. We went on a long walk, Jaxon played for hours outside, Cohen didn't make a peep unless he was hungry. Daddy came home from work... and a great way to end my day? Grey's Anatomy was on.

Today? Not so hot. I am overwhelmed. Stressed. Tired. In pain. Feeling sorry for myself missing my friends. Staring at my dirty house wishing I could clean it, but can't due to my c-section recovery. Thinking about the groceries I need to get, but can't drive for another week. Honestly scared that it will never get easier.

I know we all have our good days, and our bad. Today just is the ladder of the two.

Overall though, we are doing good. Cohen really is a great baby. He nurses well, sleeps for 5-6 hour stretches at night, ::knock on wood::, and is a very quiet and laid-back baby. Jaxon seems to really like his brother, he is constantly all over him, which makes for some stressful times worrying about the safety of the baby... especially when Tyler walks into the room as Jaxon is pulling Cohen out of the bouncer with one arm... yeah, mental note to self: never leave the two of them alone in a room. Ever.

I can't wait for Thanksgiving when my family comes to town. My Mom is the only one who has met Cohen, so I can't wait for the rest of the clan to meet him. Like I told my friend Karalie, having a baby is so fun and exciting, but it's even more fun and exciting when you're surrounded by people who are excited for you, and about the baby. Hence the reason I really really really miss KC. See... told you I was feeling bad for myself today.

Anyway, if you're not my friend on facebook, here's a link to view all the pictures we took while we were at the hospital, in case you're interested: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=563684&id=500320088&l=799dcc28a3

Now, here's a little sneak peek as to what we've been up to since getting home from the hospital:

Lots of "supervised" big brother holding little brother moments

Lots of time spent sunbathing, trying to get rid of jaundice.

Nana and Papa came to visit to meet Cohen

Papa and Tyler made Jax a sandbox while they were here! We've already spent hours upon hours outside enjoying it. Now if I could just teach Jax to leave the sand IN the sandbox ...

Jaxon and his Uncle Cooper shootin' the breeze... in their matching Hawks gear. The only difference is Cooper's says "I'm a hawkeye, like my Dad" and Jaxon's says "I'm a hawkeye, like my Grandpa".

Lots of time spent in the swing ...

Brotherly love ...

Went on our first outing ... to the park and out to dinner.

Jax spotted a dog while we were there ...

Swinging ... love his smile :)

Cohen's umbilical cord came off, so it was time for his first bath ...

Not a peep out of him ... he loved it! Much different from Jaxon's first bath, ha!

My Mom bought me this wrap, it's called a "Sleepy Wrap", very similar to the Moby. Cohen has spent lots of time in here each day... it's the only way I'm able to still help/play with Jaxon and hold Cohen at the same time. He loves it, I'm sure it's very comforting for a newborn to be wrapped up tightly against your Mom's chest. Oh, and it's handy for times like now when I'm blogging... much easier to type with two hands than one. ;) Thanks Mom... and yes, I promise he can breathe in it... you can quit worrying about him now. :)

Oh, and just lots of time spent being adorable ... which, I guess comes pretty natural. ;)

We've also been going on a morning walk each day... here Jax is holding Cohen's hand during the majority of our walk. Swoon... :) Even though most days I don't feel good, I keep hearing my doctor's voice telling me the more I can get up and move around, the better and quicker my recovery will be. So... on walks we go!

How about that for picture overload?

Well, I guess "mommy time" is over for the day... I hear Jaxon crying up from his nap, Cohen is whimpering needing to be fed, I still haven't showered... oh.. my phone is ringing, and the dog is barking.... {just kidding, we don't have a dog.}

Where's my diet coke.

And... here I go!
